Media Objects

This guide will discuss Media Objects, what they are, how to create them and how to add them to your listing.

Overview:

By having a media object you can increase the effectiveness of your listing by giving the viewer a rich multimedia experience. You can re design the whole look of your advert by adding a video or interactive slide show in addition to text. This will enable potential buyers to see how well your boat performs or how good it looks. As the saying goes: “a picture says a thousand words” . Alternatively you could create an interactive slide show to showcase an unlimited number of photos so viewers can see every aspect of your boat.

By using third party sites such as youtube.com and slide.com this already proven technology can be added to your listing with ease. It also allows countless options for other media to be added in the future. A media object is a piece of html code that is added to your listing. This code embeds a flash object which can then display your video or photos direct from the website which you created it on.

Video:

To show how the media object works look at the video below. This is a video from youtube of a Mastercraft commercial. Click on the play button in the middle of the video to start playback.

Of course you will want to record your own mini masterpiece to help sell your boat. There are many devices available to record video. Depending on what equipment you have available will determine the final quality of your video.

  • DV Camcorder - The best way to record a video is with a digital camcorder. If you don't already have one they will set you back approximately £180 new.
  • Digital Camera - Many digital still cameras will record short video's. This method offers a reasonable quality at a good price.
  • Camera Phone or PDA - Most camera phones will record video, however the quality of the video's vary greatly from model to model so the end result will vary accordingly.
Deciding on the style of video you choose will depend on the item you are selling. You can make the video action packed or go for a more practical approach and use the video to demonstrate the features of the item. The sample video on the right shows how a US company uses video to sell its performance RIBs.

When a video is uploaded to youtube it is compressed and reduced in size anyway so you need not worry about creating very high resolution footage. Youtube accepts

a variety of different file formats but you are limited to 10 minutes of footage and 100mb file size.

As youtube is now part of google all the videos are also searchable in google video. If you add a link to your listing in the information section of your video you will increase the number of people that view your boat.

Slide Show:

A slide show is simply of collection of photos in a sequence. Slide.com allows you to upload an unlimited number of photos and create a slideshow from them. Below is an example of a slide show created for a test listing.

To see how this slide show looks in a listing click here to view one of the test listings. A slide show can provide potential buyers with a detailed view of every aspect of your boat helping them getting to know what you are selling without having to be there.

How do I add one to my listing:

Adding a slide show or video to your listing is easy. The more complicated part is making the video or getting all the photos together in the first place. Youtube has a fairly comprehensive help section that covers uploading videos. All you need to do on reesmarine is paste in the code that slide or youtube creates. Have a look at the Help Centre where you will find some step by step guides to adding these objects to your listings.
